Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the success rate of AI compared to that of a bull breed?Bovine AI as a whole is considered to be 55-60% effective as a whole. Bull breeding is considered to be 75-80% effective. In our controlled breed for our current protocols this year we had a success rate of 75%, 12 out of 16 heifers.
-
What is a sync protocol and who does it?A sync protocol causes all of your heifers and or cows to go into estrus at the same time, minimizing our time of breed as well as minimizing your calving season. SOL is more than comfortable handling your sync protocol as well as the breed.
-
Do we recommend a "clean up bull"?For beef breeds of more than 5 head we do recommend a clean up bull and are willing to provide contacts to help arrange getting bull(s) too you.
-
Why AI instead of bull breeding?AI as a whole allows you to control the male genetics placed into your herd, from birth, wean, and yearling weight to likely color to carcass qualities. As well as adding genetic diversity to your herd helping keep them stronger due to genetic diversity.
-
Grass or grain finishedWe're capable of doing both at SOL, though unless specified we grass finish our beef
-
What does your beef cost per pound? We're at about $9 per pound to our customers at a finished and packaged weight, or about $7 per pound on hanging weight at the processor if you'd like to pay those fee's.
-
Why does do the prices seem cheaper for a whole beef with us?We runner smaller breeds here at SOL(mostly Dexter crosses) so while we still maintain good quality in or animals they tend to weigh less allowing people that couldn't normally afford a whole beef to be able to do so.
